Afternoon Snack: Jamie’s husband knows how much she loves penguins so for her birthday he took her to Sea World where she met an “extra affectionate” King Penguin named Johnny Five who gave here a king-size hug.

Taking the Road Less Traveled
When you take a journey don’t go round in circles - try taking the road less traveled.
Home Alone
This coming week Shawn and I will celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary but we’ll have to celebrate next weekend as Shawn is en route to MO and OK for some business meetings. It dawned on me today that this is the first time I have stayed behind to hold down the fort. In the past it’s always been me who has packed up for a business trip and in the chaos of organizing for the purpose of the trip or meeting, I hadn’t given much thought to what it feels like to be left behind. So this time it’s me and I hope I don’t get scared being left alone!
I am used to my routine with Shawn and with him not here it will feel odd and empty and I will have no one to warn that they will miss their train, no one to set the coffee pot for, no one to wash the dinner dishes. After 7 years the only itch I have is to make sure we don’t have to do too many trips without each other.
Adding 4 wheels to my choice of transport
later today i am picking up my first car - when i say first i mean a car i bought and paid for. when i was back in belfast my parents bought a 2nd car when i was doing a postgrad to get me to college but i dont count that as i didnt pay for it. then when i moved to london and subsequently nyc i didnt need wheels; my 2 feet were my main mode of transport together with public transport of various kinds. so finally shawn and i are taking the plunge and its bitter sweet in many ways - we finally moved out of the city and into the suburbs almost 2 years ago and survived without a car that long. surprisingly it wasnt that difficult - the biggest pain was grocery shopping and i regularly humped 2 or 3 bags of groceries from trader joe’s from the city back up to westchester once a week ( i only wish i had the biceps to show for it). so now part of me is ecstatic to go get wheels to take me around the county and beyond, to not have to plan what train to catch, to go exploring, to not limit my basket or cart to a weight i think i can tolerate. but on the flip side i am now a worse pollutant. we made a conscious decision to get a hybrid but i am not naieve enough to think theyre saving the environment. i guess i will live in the moment and still use my 2 feet whenever possible but having a brand new shiny car and the freedom to jump in and go wherever i want (c/o of GPS!) is going to help me continue to take the road less traveled!
Car hunting
About to trade in my former wheels ie my 2 feet for some proper wheels. Walked to 2 dealers today - Honda and Subaru - to test drive some pretty sweet rides. leaning towards the Honda Insight for its “hybridaliciousness”
